Johari Window

Johari window – named for its creators, Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham – is a cognitive psychological tool to help people to better understand their interpersonal communication and relationships.

Quadrants in a Johari Window:

The Johari window has four quadrants or Window that represent the four parts of an individual.

Let us discuss the quadrants in brief:

Open:
Characteristics or traits that are known to both the participant and his or her peers are placed into the Open quadrant. This quadrant represents traits of the subjects that both they and their peers are aware of.

Hidden:
Traits known to subjects only, but not by any of their peers, are placed into the Hidden quadrant, representing information about them their peers are unaware of.

Blind Spot:
Traits known only to the peers placed into the Blind Spot quadrant, the subject doesn’t about these characteristics. These represent information that the subject is not aware of, but others are.

Unknown:
Traits and characteristics that were not known to either the subject or the peers remain in the Unknown quadrant, representing the section of the personality one is unaware of.
It could be abilities and potentials that the subject has not discovered about himself or herself yet. An example could be that one might be a great salesperson or customer service representative, but for now he / she don’t know whether they have that ability or not.

A more aware person has a large Open quadrant with the other three areas small in comparison. This person understands why he/she acts the way he/she does and is genuine and open with others because he/she has minimized his /her Hidden Self and Blind Spots while working to bring the Unknown Self to greater awareness.

A generally unaware person has a small open window with the other three quadrants (windows) large in comparison.

One has to develop the open window as much as possible, and minimize the hidden and blind windows. At the same time one has to make serious efforts to minimize the unknown window.
